Over 390 Basque political prisoners in hunger strike in solidarity with Iosu Uribetxeberria

10 citizens and over 390 prisoners start hunger strikes and protests in
solidarity with Iosu Uribetxeberria

14 August 2012 | - : European Union International law

11 members of Herrira (asociation for rights of political prisoners) and
over 390 prisoners in Spanish and French different jails have started
hunger strikes and protests in solidarity with Iosu Uribetxeberria.

The Basque political prisoner Iosu Uribetxeberria suffers cancer and undertook a hunger strike on the
8th August to denounce the treatment he is suffering and request decent
conditions and his conditional release under article 92, he has also
denounced that the Government keeps in prison other 14 prisoners with
serious illnesses. Spanish Penal Law allows the conditional release of
prisoners suffering incurable diseases on its Article 92.

We make an urgent call on the international community to ask the Spanish
Government to fulfil its own law, and respond to Iosu’s requests.
(Aplication of article 92 of Penal) We would also like to highlight the
case of Ines del Rio and nearly 70 prisoners who are kept in prison on the
aplication of the Parot Doctrine, eventhough it has been declared to
breach Human Rights by the European Court of Human Rights, the Spanish
Government has refused to follow up the ECHR’s recommendations.

We call on everyone to write to the Spanish Embassies (you can find their
addresses on your state here
http://www.maec.es/es/EYC/Paginas/embajadas-consulados.aspx) showing your concern for this case and asking them to raise the issue with the “Juzgado
Central de Menores y Vigilancia Penitenciaria. Audiencia Nacional” and the
responsible of Penitentiary Institutions Mr Angel Yuste. We would also
appreciate if you could put forward the issue on your own country’s media
and keep us informed of any initiative you take regarding this issue.

Here you can find more information about the case and a an interview with
Iosu before he started the hunger strike.
